Active Components
Active components are devices capable of converting electrical energy into other forms; they include transistors, field-effect transistors (FETs), diodes, bipolar junction transistors (BJTs), and integrated circuits.
1. Transistors
The transistor is a common active component capable of functions such as signal amplification and switching. It is widely used in electronic devices such as computers, televisions, radios, and amplifiers.
2. Field-Effect Transistors (FETs)
Also known as field-effect transistors, these are semiconductor devices that perform amplification and switching functions. They feature a simple structure and are suitable for high-frequency and low-noise circuits.
3. Diodes
A diode is a component with only two electrodes that controls the direction of current flow. It is widely used in circuits for voltage regulation, rectification, signal detection, and switching.
4. Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs)
The BJT is a multi-terminal device capable of amplification, switching, and oscillation; it is currently one of the most widely used electronic components.
5. Integrated Circuits (ICs)
An integrated circuit is a device that incorporates millions or even hundreds of millions of electronic components onto a single chip, enabling it to perform multiple functions.
Passive Components
Passive components are devices that do not possess the capability to convert electrical energy; they include resistors, capacitors, inductors, transformers, and filters.
1. Resistors
Resistors are components that impede the flow of current in a circuit. Common types include variable resistors, potentiometers, current transformers, thermistors, and photoresistors.
2. Capacitors
Capacitors are components capable of storing electric charge. Common types include fixed capacitors, varactors (variable capacitance diodes), electrolytic capacitors, and metal-foil capacitors.
3. Inductors
Inductors are components that generate electromotive force through changing magnetic flux. Common types include coil inductors, iron-core inductors, and air-core inductors.
4. Transformers
Transformers are components capable of changing the voltage level of alternating current (AC). They are primarily used in circuits such as power supplies and converters.
5. Filters
Filters are components capable of removing noise and interference signals from a power supply voltage. Common types include low-pass filters, high-pass filters, and band-pass filters. In general, electronic components are categorized into two main types-active components and passive components-each with distinct characteristics and ranges of application. Understanding the types and functions of these components is crucial for electronics engineers and enthusiasts alike.
